Tomorrow Morning

I hope everyone is ready for another great workout tomorrow! I've got some new tricks up my sleeve. As I said last session, we have yet to hit the stadium stairs, so you can almost guarantee those will be involved. I won't fill you in on what else I have planned, but I can assure you it will be grueling. The key to toning a body is to burn fat and build muscle at the same time. Building muscle actually helps you burn fat at a faster rate. So during the bootcamp you will notice that I incorporate alot of exercises that force you to hold yourself up with your shoulders, chest, and triceps. These exercises are great for building muscle and burning fat in the upper body. All the squats, lunges, wallsits, and hillruns will take care of the lower body. We'll it's time for me to get some rest as I have to be up in about 6 hours. See you in the am! Russ

Running "The Hill"- What a way to start a Monday!

by Kerri J

Boot camp started out with a bang yesterday morning when we jogged to a small trail near Canton High School and ran "The Hill!" Russ and I led the pack of campers up and down over eight times! Everyone felt intense burning in their legs while running up the steep hill and at times some wanted to stop, but we kept everyone going until the end! Do you know how amazingly beneficial it was to finish this particular run?

I'll tell you!

- When running where the slope of the traveled terrain increases by 20% or more, we burn at least DOUBLE the amount of calories!!
- When running downhill, well… You are still expending calories, but really just enjoy the short "break" while you can!

The findings above are from a study documented in the Journal of Applied Physiology. The total findings are much more complex than what I just mentioned, but the statements above are great cliff notes to remember the next time we run “The Hill!”

To our current campers: Post your feelings towards the great calorie burning session you took place in yesterday!

Motivation: Pick it up and use it!

Small blog on my weekend experience:

Whether it's finding the drive to wake up early to exercise, pushing myself to complete that last rep in the studio or reaching for perfection in my swimming technique, motivation is a key factor needed to achieve all of these actions!

This weekend, I volunteered at the Massachusetts Special Olympic Summer Games. I picked up a large amount of athletic motivation from the incredible athletes who participated! The participating athletes ranged from ages 10 to 60 years of age, and all of them had such a positive outlook and an exponential amount of drive to overcome challenges and succeed in the events they took part of. Where we as volunteers were at the event to cheer and motivate the athletes, I found myself being more inspired and motivated by them! The everyday challenges I face, like the ones I mentioned at the beginning, seem less like challenges and more like an achievable check list! Motivation comes from many places including within, just so happens I had a few great examples to get a "pick me up" from this weekend!
